I have high expectations for this morning, but the mountains are covered in fog when I wake up. First back to Meiringen then. Lets see whether there is something to do on the air base.
Here, the light is not particularly good either. After a while a lot of aircraft take off, just like yesterday.
There is also a weird colored F-5E on the taxiway, but this one does not take off.
After a while, a DHC-6-300 Twin Otter turns in for landing…
…and shortly thereafter a Pilatus PC-6 Turbo Porter departs.
A Hornet turns back as well.
But then it stays quiet for a whole hour. They do not follow the same schedule as yesterday and I notice that more and more people are departing. It seems like all aircraft have evaded to other fields. Apparently they are fed up with us around the base. I decide to wait for another while.
After an hour, some helicopters fly back and forth to return materials from the mountain. One of them even carries a leaking toilet, yuck.
Then it stays quiet for another hour, whereafter a Twin Otter appears.
Then again 40 minutes of quietness, before the Turbo Porter returns for landing.
For me it is completely clear now. Most likely all aircraft stay away for the rest of the day to return tonight or even tomorrow. It is 13:30 and when I leave now, I can be back home early in the night. All those hours waiting, only to see the same landings again is not what I am in for now. The weather is not cooperating either, everything is gray.
Going back to the mountains for photography is not a very good option for the same reason. I call the motel in Mürren that I had booked earlier for tonight and cancel the booking. Luckily they understand and accept it.
This has been a nice little trip, with much better photographs than I had expected before hand. The training day for the air show was indeed spectacular. Pity, the real show was canceled though. Especially the beautiful weather of yesterday would have been ideal.
I think I will return somewhere in the coming years, but then I will try to find a different location for each day to photograph from. Just, to get some more variation in the photographs and to avoid the masses of people on the real show days.
