Later I intend to cross the country to the west coast, south from Kaikoura, but first I continue north along the coast for about 20 minutes to the Ohau Stream and Waterfall. This is the place where juvenile seals play between march and october. The parents bring their young via the stream to a protected pool under the waterfall and return to the ocean themselves to feed. A kind of nursery it is. Quite unexpected, it’s chilly here in the forest and darkish as well. The waterfall I find quickly.
Difficult to photograph with these major differences in light. The green is mostly in the dark while the water is illuminated by the sun. It better could have been the other way around. But not bad after all.
Later I will find out that there is a seal colony as well here at Ohau Point Lookout on the ocean side of the road. Kind of logical if the puppies are brought here. Didn’t think of it. Will have a look here on my next visit.
I return to Kaikoura and continue further south to go back to Greymounth on the west coast via the beautiful Arthur’s Pass. This 500 kilometer trip will most probably take a full day because there are so many things to see.
During the first part on the east side of the mountains it drizzles a bit and at the highest point everything is covered in mist. On the other side everything is bathed in lovely warm sunlight. I stop for a few photographs at a valley full with sheep. The whole herd starts running as soon as I get out of the car. They have lots of space here and are almost out of sight when I am finally ready to take a photograph. Stupid animals hahaha.
A little further down the road is Castle Hill. An area with beautiful eroded rocks.
This place offers so many opportunities for nice photographs…
That trail in the foreground give a bit of an idea about the size of these things.
Nice look throughs also. This one succeeded quite well.
After a while I am done here as there are lots of other things to see.
